Divaka Perera – Chief Investigator

Divaka Perera is the Chief Investigator of REVIVED. He is an academic interventional cardiologist and so plays a dual role – a researcher by day (as a Reader in Cardiology at King’s College London) and an interventional cardiologist at night (at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital) … and vice versa (depending on grant deadlines and PAMI calls! – Primary Angioplasty in Myocardial Infarction).  The theme of his research is myocardial ischaemia in the context of coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease, with the ultimate aim of translating the insights gained from detailed physiological assessment of the heart to clinical treatments that are evaluated using carefully designed, multicentre clinical trials. Some of you would have worked with Divaka during BCIS-1, which was another UK multicentre collaborative trial conducted a few years ago under the umbrella of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS). We are very pleased that BCIS have officially adopted REVIVED, which is also known as BCIS-2.

Tim Clayton – Co-Investigator

Tim has worked at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) since completing his MSc in Medical Statistics in 1994 and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medical Statistics and on the management board of the LSHTM Clinical Trials Unit. His main area of research has been in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials with particular focus on cardiovascular disease, remote ischaemic pre-conditioning, surgery and HIV. He has also been involved in a number of observational studies and most recently investigating the link between lung function and long-term-cardiovascular outcomes and respiratory infection with (i) cardiovascular events (ii) venous thromboembolism.

Tim has been closely involved in teaching at LSHTM for a number of years and currently organises and teaches on courses in clinical trials and statistical methods used in epidemiological studies.

Steve Robertson – Senior Data Manager

Steve’s background is in Information Management and he has been working on randomised controlled trials since 1998 both at LSHTM and St George’s, University of London. During this time he has worked on the following trials: CESAR (adult ECMO), TMC (liver transplantation), INNOVO (neonatal respiratory disease), ACST (stroke), txt2stop (smoking cessation), REPAIR (pre conditioning in renal transplant patients), ERICCA (pre conditioning in CABG patients) and PREVENTT (Preoperative intravenous iron to treat anaemia in major surgery).

Richard Evans – Senior Trial Manager

Richard has worked on clinical trials since 2002, starting at Imperial College on the DIRECT trial which investigated the effects of candesartan on diabetic eye disease. He left Imperial College in 2008 to join LSHTM working on a mammographic density study. Richard has been part of the LSHTM CTU team since March 2011 when he joined as the trial manager for ERICCA.

Bhavik Modi – Cardiology Registrar and BHF Clinical Research Fellow

Bhavik completed his undergraduate medical education at Cambridge University and University College London. After completing junior doctor jobs at UCLH, Royal Brompton, Harefield and Hammersmith, Bhavik has completed 3 years of General Cardiology specialty training within the London Deanery. He is now conducting a PhD at St Thomas Hospital under the supervision of Divaka Perera under the broad theme of ‘optimising physiology-guided management of coronary artery disease’.

Natalia Briceno – Cardiology Clinical Research Fellow and Registrar

Natalia Briceno is a Cardiology Specialist Registrar who came out of her training programme in 2014 to complete an MD in coronary and LV physiology at King’s College London, with her main research interests surrounding ischaemic cardiomyopathy and the impact of various support strategies in cardiogenic shock and during high risk percutaneous coronary intervention. She graduated from Imperial College London in 2007, having obtained a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery with a distinction in clinical practice and a Bachelor of Science in Cardiovascular Sciences. She has worked on the REVIVED trial since 2014 focusing on recruitment at St Thomas’ Hospital, and helping to organise regional REVIVED meetings. She has also gained clinical trial experience through working on the multi-centre trial AIMS, which is looking at the effect of Irbesartan on aortic dilatation in Marfans’ syndrome.

Ruth Canter – Trial Manager

Ruth joined the Clinical Trials Unit as a Trial Manager in November 2017. Before joining the CTU, Ruth worked at the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre (ICNARC) on a number of observational studies and RCTs, including CALORIES, RAIN, FiSh, FIRST-ABC and PRISM. Ruth studied Biology at Mount Holyoke College (MA, USA) and has an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
